Mr. Gowhar Latief Khan, a young postgraduate from Dawlatabad, Qazigund, envisioned a future where Kashmir's abundant horticultural produce could be transformed into high-quality, value-added food products. Recognizing the increasing demand for safe, nutritious, and shelf-stable foods, he aspired to establish an enterprise that would reduce post-harvest losses while creating new income opportunities for farmers and rural youth.

In South Kashmir, where fruits and vegetables are produced in abundance, the lack of localized food processing facilities has long limited opportunities for value addition and income diversification. Although equipped with a strong educational background and a passion for entrepreneurship, Mr. Khan initially faced significant challenges, including limited technical expertise, lack of exposure to food processing technologies, inadequate access to processing equipment, and the absence of strong market linkages. These constraints made it difficult to convert his vision into a sustainable business.

A turning point came in 2022 when Mr. Khan connected with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Anantnag. Recognizing his entrepreneurial potential, the KVK facilitated his participation in several skill development programmes under the Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) initiative, along with specialized training programmes on value addition conducted by the Division of Food Science & Technology, SKUAST-Kashmir.

Under the guidance and mentorship of scientists at KVK Anantnag, Mr. Khan successfully completed a seven-day training programme on "Entrepreneurship Opportunities in Value Addition of Horticulture Crops." The programme provided practical exposure to fruit and vegetable processing, preservation techniques, quality assurance, product packaging, branding, and marketing strategies. Continuous technical support from KVK further strengthened his confidence to establish and expand his enterprise.

To promote his products and build market visibility, KVK Anantnag encouraged Mr. Khan to participate in agricultural exhibitions, district-level fairs, SKUAST-K events, and university programmes, where he showcased his innovative range of processed food products. These platforms not only enhanced his market exposure but also enabled him to connect directly with consumers and potential buyers.

Today, South Kashmir Safalta Agro Foods stands as a successful example of how scientific training, technical mentorship, and entrepreneurial determination can transform locally available horticultural produce into value-added products with strong market potential. Mr. Khan's journey demonstrates the importance of innovation, skill development, and institutional support in creating sustainable agribusiness enterprises while inspiring young entrepreneurs to explore opportunities in food processing and value addition.
